DIY/Do It Yourself: Upgrade to the Latest Release

Requirements 7-Zip, NPP/Notepad++ or other text editor, PortableApps.com Launcher Generator/PAL, PortableApps.com Installer/PAI.

1. Get the latest portable app. template, and extract the content with 7-Zip.
2. Get the latest:
   1. 7-Zip release: 7-Zip for 32-bit Windows (.exe), 7-Zip for 64-bit Windows x64 (Intel 64 or AMD64) (.exe), and 7-Zip Extra (.7z),
   2. 7-Zip Theme Manager.
3. Extract the 32 bit installer to 7-ZipPortableApp7-Zip folder,
   
   Do the same thing with the 64 bit installer to App7-Zip64 folder, the 7-Zip extra package to App7-ZipExtra folder, and 7-Zip Theme package to App7zTM folder.
4. Browse to App7-Zip and App7-Zip64 folder and delete Uninstall.exe.
5. Look up version from the 7zFM.exe "Properties" window,
   
6. Browse to 7-ZipPortableAppAppInfo and open appinfo.ini file with NPP. Replace the [Version] section with the latest version number. Make sure the PackageVersion entry is in 4 place digit, eg. 18.1.0.0 not just 18.1.0 nor 18.1,

    [Version]
    PackageVersion=18.1.0.0
    DisplayVersion=18.01 with 7zTM 2.1.1 (32/64 bit)
   

7. Weve provided the 7-Zip Theme Manager launcher. It is actually a simple launcher that works just like a common Windows shortcut, so no need to regenerate it.
8. Run PAL, paste the template folder address C:TEST7-ZipPortable, and click Go�a new launcher will be created,
   
9. Test the new launchers by following this guide.
10. When all is OK, then delete the 7-ZipPortableData folder and run PAI, paste the package folder address C:TEST7-ZipPortable, and click Go�to create the installer package.
    
11. Use the installer package to upgrade your portable application. Dont forget to at least backup your Data folder before any upgrade :)
12. If you find any changes thats not handled by the launcher, consult the PAL help file to modify the launcher yourself or ask for our paid upgrade support.

Portability Notes

• 7-Zip do not have portable mode. It stores its settings in Windows registry and write help file data to Windows data folders while running.
• Make sure it exits cleanly before plugging out your thumbdrive.
• You can help by sending request to the official developer to add "portable mode" to their future release.
